first portion of the interview translated..... thank you p'took sharing the files this interview is soooo long i still haven't read it all, but will translate it as I go This is up to page 106 before section 2 starts (sorry for any typos ) (there were a couple of things in the beginning description that i didn't understand, but it's about what the writer is doing so not so important ) --- 1. Beneath the sun which is about the set behind the horizon, in the middle of Asoke Road, with cars driving back and forth.. out a little bit further. If you were to stop and rest for a moment and look up at the lights of the GMM logo that is shining brightly, this is the home of the strongest record label in Thailand. In here, Thongchai McIntyre, the one that everyone has given the nickname “superstar,” is currently moving his body to the sound of music and the shutter. At this moment, Thongchai McIntyre is standing on the 41st floor, even though it is not the highest floor of the building, everyone who is working here knows that he is the TOP artist that Grammy will ever be able to produce. Setting up an imagine without embarrassment, I am currently sitting here watching and breathing in the same room as a “superstar” with conflicting thoughts that is like a volcano ready to explode. And within in a few moments, the talk between Hamburger and P’Bird is about to begin. I am probably no different than the majority of Thais who grew up with “listening” and “singing” hit songs like “sabai sabai,” “mun koi doo lae laa ruksaa duang jai,” “nang nuan,” “boomerang,” “koo gut,” “moak rue kwaan,” “prikee noo,” “sia dai,” “som dai,” “fan ja,” “oh la nor my love,” “nana” and many other songs over the past twenty years. Turning back time to 2527 (1984), a young banker , the winner of a standout singer award of Thailand was invited by Ter Rawat Puttinan to enter into the music industry. Two years after that, the album Haad Sai Sai Lom Song Rao was released, followed by the album Sabai Sabai (2530/1987), Rup Kwan Won Mai (2530/1987), Thongchai 2501 (2531/1988) Sor.Kor.Sor (2531/1988) until the album Boomerang in 2533 (1990). This was the turning point that made the changed everything and made Thongchai McIntyre’s fame stay on top for a long time. In the same regard, there is also the ticking minute hand of time, which counting the days, has made it harder for his fans to be able to meet this young singer than before. In the yellow toned office of Boosaba Daorueng, CEO of Gmm Grammy, I’m running around talking …. My hands are filled with a big set of questions that I have prepared, and I believe that these questions are ones that everyone across the country would also want to know what the life of a “superstar” is like… what does he eat so that he doesn’t get old, what time does he sleep?, is he addicted to any dramas? How long has it been since he has set foot on the roads of Bangkok and does he ever get lonely living the life of a “superstar?”But before we get to those questions, I just want to know, I just want to know how the man behind this fame lives his life in this building. “I live an easier life than the guards” The superstar with the title “Greatest Male Singer” bursts out in laughter at the beginning of our talk, and please believe, we will hear the sound of this laughter, which is a trademark of his, many many more times. “My life has nothing at all. When it is time, I come in to see P’Lek (Boosaba Daorueng) in this room. If not that, then I go down and do dance rehearsal, or sing in bottom floor. I can’t even remember what floor it is that we use for dance rehearsal or for singing. Practically every time, there has to be someone who brings me there. I think that if working is too hard, then it’s no longer fun. Don’t make yourself difficult, it’s tiring, live an easy life, that’s enough.” I then ask, an easy life like you say, about how many times do you come into Grammy a month? “It depends on the work. Like now, I’ll come in every other day. If I’m doing dance rehearsal then I will come in for about 4 to 5 hours, I’ll dance and do my work too. If they don’t tell me to go home, then I won’t go. These days, I work to the point where they have to tell me to leave. They have to come tell me that it’s time for me to rest. Every time that I am eating, no one dares to come over, they come in quietly and say that time has run out, that it’s time to eat now because they know that I don’t want to stop. I like to stay in front of the mirror, dancing. When I’m in the recording studio, I hardly ever come out. It’s to the point where the sound producers ask me ‘You don’t want to try and listen to the ones you have recorded first’” (laughs)

“When I am in the recording studio or the dance rehearsal room, it is happiness. I can listen to music and sing along, when it’s over I can look at the view and then sing, dance, I don’t have anything else in my life to do. I don’t go walking at the mall, I live in the dance rooms, I can’t dance in the malls.” As I hear this from his mouth and comparing it with the news over the years, I can feel that this superstar keeps to himself a lot.
The smiling singer, has dropped himself down on a chair “I don’t keep to myself, I don’t have a lot to do. I sing, I dance, I swim. A day goes by quickly. I’ll want to do this or do that, when I put on my swimming trunks, I’ll tap dance the whole time, then the water will become lower. Oy! Where can I go? But honestly, even if I didn’t have a friend, it’s ok because I can play by myself.”
“If I am at my house in the country side, or am out of the country, sometimes I go walking on the street. Let other people walk passed me sometimes. I get to walk pass other people like a regular person does. Like when I go to Japan, I think Ok here we go, I get to eat ramen with seaweed. I eat about half, once half is gone, then we go in line, and eat another half. It’s not that I don’t get to anything, but it’s fun. The child in me hasn’t even come out yet. It comes out when I am on the concert stage. When I experience Japan, it’s like hey I have to be a grown up”
“P’Ter (Rawat Puttinan) and my dad once told me that I have a very child like nature. That I play around a lot like a monkey.” He emphasizes “When I don’t have a friend, I’ll just play with myself. Sometimes I will take an electronic nail filer and file different things. If it can do it can file nails, then it must be able to file other things as well. I really do just sit around and play with things like this by myself.” As he is speaking, he is showing me the motions with his hands with much flavor. Before the group breaks out in the sound of laughter, I ask him playfully, do you ever use money?
“I never get to, but when I do it’s because I have to. But when I stay home, what am I going to use? At most it is to make food, to make merits. I put an emphasis on making merits, but when I buy stuff it is like everyone else who buys things to eat and use.”
Is it ever lonely? A life like Thongchai McIntyre (I look deep into the eyes of favorite singer of Thailand).
“Lonely… it’s lonely, but it when it is lonely, it’s good.”
“If I’m lonely then I will live with it. I’ll be lonely and then not long after AF7 and the loneliness is gone. The house is full of friends. I get to take courses and learn all day long. Every corner of my has a small space. Sometimes I will call P’Lek and have her come over for a party and will turn on music to listen to.”
“Loneliness is okay. When it is time to work, I go to work. If there are a few people and you are lonely that is better than there being a lot of people and still being lonely. For some people, if they are around a lot of people, they are still lonely like they are by themselves. Like for me, it’s normal because there is no one for me to talk to. I’ve already talked to the trees, I’ve talked to them to the point that their flowers have blossomed. I say that it is exciting and fun in a different kind of way. If you are a fun person, then even your lonely you will have fun.”
Don’t you ever think that you stay at home too much?
“Never, I am someone who uses a home for all of its value. If I ever want to go anywhere, then I go, but when I am with it, when I look at it I think “hey! My house is pretty, please get prettier” and you know it was able to get prettier (laughs). During the weekends, my family will come and have fun, the whole house is full. We’ll make something to eat, all over the kitchen and they will force me to eat it because they love me. The second I sit down its ‘Bird I brought this for you, I bought this for you’”
“’Stop! I’m not eating anymore, I don’t have any place to keep it anymore!’ The smile is still taking up his whole face of this superstar. I pick up a message and question from Mayura Swatseela to read to him, she is his former co-host of Thongchai McIntyre from 7See Concert and the drama “Baan Soi Dao” which the two stared together.
“We may not have seen each other that often lately, but I believe that we each always miss each other. But I wonder, you don’t really go out anywhere, aren’t you tired of it? Don’t you want to go out for fun? Try and go walking at Siam Paragon like other people do. You can call and ask me to go with you, I’ll go keep you company.” He smiles shyly before he starts to reveal stories from the past of his sister in work.
“P’Tuk, before we were very happy, ever since we were hosts of 7See concert together (2529-2530). Back then you could say that we were called the favorite and funny pair. Whenever we went to an event, we would sing together. At that time I didn’t have an album, I didn’t have anything, I had to sing the song “Num Nah Kao Sao Nah Gliea” with her all the time. “ The singer bursts into a laughter that fills the room.
But P'Tuk invited me, but to tell you honestly, the image of walking in a mall is never in my head. It's not that I can't remember that image, but it never had that image. The reason why is because I myself don't want to go walking there, I don't know why I would go. My happiness is when I'm with my work. Everything is in my work. So in that case, the work schedule, or things that I use in my everyday life, others are the one that find it for me. So after awhile, since it's like this, I don't go when I'm in Thailand" "But Siam Paragon, I've been there before, but I went in the back elevator, went behind the stage and went straight up to sing. (laughs) You could say that I have never walked through the front doors of a mall like other people"

"Like Central World, I haven't been there once. As for Siam, I've been there, but it was when we were promoting the anti-piracy of cds. Another time was when we were taping the MV of "Kon Mai Mee Fan," I went there as well. See my team brought me to go visit Siam, but they end up bringing me at 6am" He makes fun of his life in a humorous way, to the point where it makes you look up at the sky train and wonder if this superstar has ever ridden on it.
“When the skytrain first began, I imagined that if I had the chance to go on it, where the place I would go would be like. Before this, I once went on one while I was abroad. I asked P’Noi (NokNoi Pornpichit – personal manager) if we were to compare them, would they be different or the same.”
“P’Noi suggested that maybe we could ask the operators to let me ride it once when there was no one. But if it’s like that then I don’t really want to. Because if I’m going to go then I’m going to go. I’ll wear my slippers and shorts. I think one day I’ll sneak out, right now I’m even thinking about it. I’ll wear a hat, I’ll hide my face, wear sunglasses and take some money with me. When it’s time I’ll wave down a taxi, but the taxi driver will probably think that this passenger has some kind of problem” (laughs)
“But these things aren’t really a problem for me because I myself don’t want to go. I live in the city, I’m a city person, but I am not completely a city person. I am a homebody, I like to stay home. P’Tuk you probably will have to wait a long time if you want to bring me out.” What about abroad? A life there, you must be able to have a little more fun than you do in Thailand.
“Abroad, I get to walk the streets like other people, but if you’re asking about the malls then I am not really someone to go walk there for leisure. For example if I think of something that I want to buy then I will go straight for it. When I go buy something when I’m abroad, I will go straight for it, or else I will not buy anything at all because there is a lot of stuff. I enjoy the stuff that is there, if I’m going to buy then I’ll buy. When I happy, I’ll end up buying everything, go on a buying spree.”
“For example, when I went to Hawaii the first time, instead of buying the small fruits I bought a watermelon. If I’m going to buy a chicken, I won’t buy a regular chicken, I’ll buy a turkey. It’s fun”
As table fills with the sound of laughter, I ask P’Bird if he had to choose between “happiness” today with a lift that has everything and “happiness” of the days from his past, how different are they?
“Honestly, they were both happiness. Back then it was happy, but it was like raw and ripe and sometimes we didn’t have anything and other times we were full. But today, I am happy with living my life at home. It might be a little bad because in the days that I have a home, I end up not having my father and mother. Some of the happiness may have disappeared. Like the happiness when I was able to reach over and hug them, but it’s ok. Mom is in the urn, she is still nearby. I still bow and pray to her and take good care of her. For me it might be a little strange, I miss my mom very much. When it gets to Thai New Years, we’ll carry mom’s urn out to make merits with us and we will clean it too. It is like we are still close, but it’s a way of being close in my own way. I think she will understand because I miss her very much. I don’t know, maybe I might have done something wrong, but sometimes I will pour it out to touch sometimes as well.” For the most part do you think of the past or the future?
“The future, sometimes far in the future sometimes in the near future. If it’s too far, then I have to look at the time because sometimes if I rush too far ahead into the future, then life will get tiring. Just the near future is ok”
“Before I use to look 10 years ahead because I would think of how I could make my mom happy. So that everyone could be happy. But when my mom is not here, I’ve started to look at it in a shorter span. I’ll ask for another 3 years, another 5 years, till now where I don’t have to anymore. I live my life day to day.”
If you follow the news closely, then you will know that Thongchai McIntyre has about 90 rai of land in Chiang Rai called “Baan Rai Udom Sook.” It is a home that has a lot of area that he once said that he created because he wanted his mom to live in a place with good weather.
In this day where his love has passed away, Hamburger can’t help but ask about this house. In a time where he still must work hard like this, does he have time to go and visit the house so that he doesn’t miss it anymore?
“The house at Chiang Rai is like a vacation home for everyone in the family, for the grandkids, for the brothers and sisters to come and stay and rest, and when the weather starts to cool down, we’ll all have a place to go. And we grow our own rice, ever since we had the house at Chiang Rai, I hardly ever eat rice from outside. We grow it ourselves and eat it ourselves. And we’re very proud of it, my rice is the best tasting there is sow it. Mom sowed it and she eat it too. Before our family didn’t have any rice to eat sign for it at a store beforehand. But now we don’t have to. We plow it, we sow it, we cut it ourselves to eat on our own land. It is something that I’m proud of that in the days where my father and mother have gone to sleep, that I am able to use something of my moms.
“I haven’t been there in many months, in the past, I went there often. When I did go, I would stay for a long time, I’ll ride a bike around for fun, swim, watch the buffalo spa. I call it a buffalo spa because there is a pond were the buffalos will go and lay in the water and I went to go sit and watch so I decided to call it a “buffalo spa.” When a buffalo sleeps, the eyes are very beautiful, if no one knew they would think that I am a difficult person. They must think that I live a fancy life, but instead I go lay and look at the eyes of a buffalo. The black portion of a buffalo’s eye is really big, no one can ever see the white part. And the eyelashes are so curled too, I don’t know where they got the eyelash curlers from.” Thongchai lets out another joke and sure enough the table is filled with laughter.
